Lathi Khela is a traditional Bangladeshi folk art of stick fighting, deeply rooted in the country's cultural heritage. It’s a form of self defence also. Basically selected bamboos are used as lathi (Stick) and the practitioners are known as Lathials. Traditional musical instruments are played to maintain the rhythms in the movement performed. Enriched with different combat techniques, dance and strategic moves are considered as the vital part of Lathi khela. Historically, it was performed during festivals as a form of physical training, amusement, and sometimes as a means of asserting power in conflicts. During British rule, Lathi Khela, along with other weapon-based practices, faced severe restrictions. The Zamindars (landlords) maintained groups of skilled fighters, known as Lathials, to showcase their strength and reinforce their authority in society. Lathials also got organized to protest the British rulers which became a great concern to them. Lathi Khela and its amazing stories has been referenced in numerous instances throughout Bengali literature.

In modern times, this once-thriving art has become nearly extinct. However, efforts to preserve and revive it have been made by Grand Master Siddhacharya Yuree Vajramunee, who personally trained in multiple styles of Lathi Khela and martial arts styles , also developed structured curricula for Lathi Khela. He won a Gold medal in competitive lathi khela held in Rajshahi. He dedicated significant time to collecting and preserving its lost techniques and traditions. The first-ever academic article on Lathi Khela in Bangladesh was written by Vajramunee and published in the “Centenary Commemorative Volume” (1913–2013), a national journal by the Bangladesh National Museum.

He also conducted international seminars, workshops in places like University of Brunei Darussalam, University of Kalyani, India, National Museum and Silpokola Academy, Dhaka, bringing this ancient martial art to global recognition. In recognition of his exceptional skills and contributions, Ostad Sirjul Haque Chowdhury of Kushtia,(-1987) a pioneer Lathi Khela leader and great organizer, officially awarded him the title of "Ostade Azam" (Great Master).

It is also important to acknowledge Bengali writer and lathikhela ostad Sheikh Riazuddin Ahmed of Rangpur (1882-1972), a prominent figure in the early history of Bangladeshi Lathi Khela, whose influence helped shape its legacy. Organizations like the Bangladesh Lathi Khela Samity continue to uphold this heritage by organizing training camps and workshops, ensuring that the legacy of Lathi Khela lives on for future generations.
